Visa applications can be very complicated things, even for those who have done it once or twice before, each new application can create new challenges. Most applicants go through the process once or a handful of times and usually across different application types. Employers often file many more applications, but are still subject to changing rules and interpretations.

Sometimes things don’t go according to plan and this can result in one of four responses from Immigration New Zealand:

  • Application returned - if your application fails the various lodgement checks, it can be returned, although this is rare given applications are now lodged online and INZ takes your fee at the same time.

  • Request for more information (RFI) - INZ needs more information in order to make a decision. These can also sometimes include concerns or issues in relation to documents already provided.

  • Potentially Prejudicial Information (PPI) - this is more significant and is INZ signalling that they have a specific concern or concerns in relation to your application and are asking you to comment.

  • Decline - obviously the bigger issue and harder to challenge or overcome.

Both applicants and employers can receive the same letters as above, although employers can also face more significant issues raised by INZ’s compliance team.
